Doctors Opposed NHS - Shock

Doctors Opposed NHS – Shock!

How much longer are we going to be saddled with the fact that the BMA opposed the setting up of the NHS in the 1940s? I have no idea what stance Anne Widdicombe’s female ancestors took on the vote for women. It is irrelevant to whether she has the vote today. In exactly the same way, the BMA today is a different organisation. In any case, most DOCTORS did not oppose it. If we are going to go back to the middle of the last century, then please let us remember that the Tories opposed the setting up of the NHS.

The quality of the debate on the NHS is deteriorating. This is a clear sign that the coalition government is on the back foot. Despite all the rhetoric, there is no valid reason for passing this Bill. It is ill-conceived, will be a danger to the health of the public, will increase health inequalities, will NOT give the power to clinical commissioners but will increase the privatisation of the NHS, with profits going to the private sector. This is a retrograde and dangerous step and should be fought with all the tools open to us in a democratic society.
